The Municipality of Kanjiža is distinguished by industrious and talented people, which has been the case since the Bronze Age. Ever since, prospering little settlements have existed on this area. The medieval documents describe Kanjiža as a royal land, that was signed to the Church in 1093 but during the reign of the Ottoman Empire it was not settled. The gradual development of the municipality started in the 19th century and proceeded in the 20th century.
In the year of 1908, Kanjiža gained the status of a city with an orderly council. The new Town Hall was built in 1912, the spa and the Catholic church had been upgraded, and the Orthodox church received its present structure and semblance.
The area of the Municipality is rich in natural resources, which contributes to the town's dynamic economic development.
One of the most important resources is the high quality agricultural land, which carries great potential for the progression of agriculture and the food industry.
An important resource of energetic raw material is situated beneath the area of the Municipality.
Crude oil and natural gas undergo further refinement processes and disribution. Additionally to the above-mentioned, the geothermal water is also a potential energy source. The therapeutic use of geothermal water in the spa can take pride in long years of tradition.
Significant rise of quality can be indentified in the construction-, building materials'-industry, in the metal processing sector, and in insulator manufacturing.
Vital clay reserves can be found on the territory of the Municipality, which opened the door to found the predecessor of the "Potisje-Tondach" roof tile factory in 1903, the factory that has been providing an opportunity for employment several decades back.
The entire municipality has a temperate continental climate, with hot summers and mildly cold winters, which are highly benefitial for tourism.
The Municipality has a capacity of 652 berths. As a result of a years' long tradition and high level service, the health & spa-tourism received a favourable place on the therapeutic market.
Spa tourism in "The Spa of Kanjiza" has been approved by the ISO9001 quality assurance standards.
In addition, the four-star "Aquapanon" and "Lupus" hotels at the Spa can satisfy any special requirement of the tourists.
With the development of small- and middle-enterprises, and the promotion of entrepeneurships the Municipality has a driveforce that entails an unavoidable direction of economic, technological and social development of the Municipality. Kanjiža has always paid significant attention to education and culture. Today the city has a library, along with the Institute for Education and Culture: "CNESA" , educational unions, the music school, and the Nagy József Regional Creative Workshop.
Besides the quality work of cultural and artistic groups in the city there are famous programs like the Writers' camp, Days of Jazz, athletic and swimming marathons, and international festivals of fishing and dancing.
The Municipality of Kanjiža has a weekly newspaper called "Új Kanizsai Újság"in Hungarian, which means New Paper of Kanjiža, and a journal called Orbis. It can also take pride in its local cable television and its local distribution of cabel TV channels. Kanjiža has day care centres, nursery-schools, three primary schools, a music school, an agricultural-technological high school, along with several clubs and unions (even for not so common sports such as: wrestling, kayak, dance, extreme sports etc.)
